The University of Redlands women's soccer team did just
enough to down Whittier College on Wednesday night in Redlands as
the Bulldogs won, 1-0.
The shot margin (39-5) heavily favored Redlands, but the Poets hung
tough, permitting just four attempts on goal.
Sophomore midfielder Maddy Phillips (Seattle, WA) scored for the
third time in two matches as she converted on a crisp pass
from junior midfielder Jessi Hoyt (Boise, ID) in the 19th minute.
From that point on, despite a myriad of opportunities to build upon
their lead, the Bulldogs struggled to put shots on target.
In between the posts for the Maroon and Gray, senior goalkeeper
Tenley Rawlings (Salt Lake City, UT) played brilliantly. She earned
her first shutout of the season, stopping both shots that Whittier
took on goal. Leah Betsworth sustained the loss in net for the
Poets.
With the victory, the Bulldogs have defeated Whittier for the
12th consecutive time. It is the team's longest active
winning streak against Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference (SCIAC) opposition.
Redlands (2-3, 1-0 SCIAC) continues its conference schedule with a
Saturday match against Occidental College. Game time is set for 11
a.m. in Eagle Rock.
