Sophomore midfielder Maddy Phillips (Seattle,
WA) registered the golden goal eight minutes into the first
overtime period as the University of Redlands women's soccer
team squeaked out a 2-1 victory over Cal Lutheran University in
Thousand Oaks on Wednesday.
Redlands controlled the tempo from the commencement of the tilt,
outshooting the Regals, 11-1, in the first half before posting a
similar margin (14-3) in the second frame. In addition, the
Bulldogs unleashed two shots to Cal Lutheran's zero in the
first overtime period.
Junior defender Chelsea Hafley (Redlands, CA) received a myriad of
opportunities to put the Maroon and Gray up early on, clanging the
crossbar iron with a shot at the 16-minute mark before taking an
equally-impressive attempt four minutes later that was halted by
Cal Lutheran's Kristin Borzi.
Hafley's blue-collar efforts prevailed in the 64th minute of
play when she converted on a penalty kick, giving Redlands the 1-0
advantage.
Just 12 minutes later, Mayra Virgen hooked up with Aubrie Smith via
a through ball, and Smith beat out senior goalkeeper Tenley
Rawlings (Salt Lake City, UT) to knot the tally at one apiece.
Solid defensive efforts by both teams in the final 14 minutes of
regulation forced the match into overtime.
Phillips darted down the right wing in the 98th minute,
and junior forward Leslie Horner (Portland, OR) threaded
a pass to her, setting up a scoring opportunity. The Seattle,
WA, native then took dead aim at the goal and spoiled Cal
Lutheran's comeback bid with the game-winning score.
Rawlings earned the victory in net for the Bulldogs, making two
saves. In spite of stopping nine shots, Borzi settled for the loss,
accounting for both goals allowed by the Regals.
With the win, the Maroon and Gray has taken three straight from Cal
Lutheran, which includes the Bulldogs' series sweep last
year.
Redlands (4-4, 3-2 SCIAC) returns to Farquhar Field on Saturday for
an 11 a.m. match against the Sagehens of Pomona-Pitzer Colleges.
