The fourth-seeded University of Redlands women's soccer team upset the No. 15 Cal Lutheran University Regals in this afternoon's Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Postseason Tournament semi-final match by a score of 2-0.
With today's victory, Redlands advances to the SCIAC Postseason Tournament final and looks to grab its third tournament title since the event's inception in 2006.
Senior captain defender Chelsea Hafley (Redlands, CA) gave the Bulldogs the early offensive momentum by coming through with her fifth netter of the season. She received a corner kick and eventually directed it into the back of the net at the 17th minute.
The score remained unchanged as the two teams exchanged shots back and forth until the 56:34 mark when the Bulldogs' leading scorer, junior forward Fionna Connolly (Salem, OR), provided her eighth goal of the season. Connolly had to battle for the opportunity during a goalmouth scramble but she managed to poke it through the crowd of defenders, including past Regal senior goalkeeper Kristin Borzi (Downey, CA).
The regular-season SCIAC champions showed some fight by putting up seven shots and five corner kicks in the second half but failed to convert any of their chances.
Redlands sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Foreman (San Jose, CA) picked up her first collegiate postseason victory and collected two saves during 90 minutes of action.
The Bulldogs now advance to Saturday's final round of the SCIAC Postseason Tournament, which pits them against the Tigers of Occidental College.
