The No. 9 University of Redlands women's tennis team
kicked off the 2010 season on Friday with a non-conference match
against NAIA opponent Concordia University – Irvine but
suffered a 1-8 loss to the Eagles. The Bulldogs rallied back on
Saturday to dominate the Tigers of Occidental College in a Southern
California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) match by a
score of 9-0.
Against Concordia, the No. 2 duo of juniors Rachael Miller (Newport
Beach, CA) and Sara Yoshinaga (Honolulu, HI) nabbed the
team's only victory with a 9-8(6) performance.
During Saturday's match, the Maroon and Gray rolled past
Occidental with resounding scores at every slot. In doubles, the
Bulldogs combined for a 24-1 showing to quickly gain a 3-0 lead.
The momentum continued through the singles matches, with Yoshinaga
taking care of her No. 4 opponent, 6-1, 6-0, and senior Paige
Sumida (Hilo, HI) clinching the team's victory with a 6-1,
6-1 conquest at the No. 2 position.
Redlands (1-1, 1-0 SCIAC) hosts the University of La Verne in a
conference match on Friday at 2 p.m. on Verdieck Courts.
