The No. 20 University of Redlands women's tennis lost its second
match to a top-12 opponent in as many days by coming up short
against No. 8 Pomona-Pitzer Colleges in a Southern California
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) bout for first place in
the standings. After winning only one doubles point, the Bulldogs
never regained the lead en route to a 2-7 loss to the Sagehens.
Redlands dropped competitive doubles matches at No. 2, which was
decided in a tiebreak, and No. 3, but then looked to the No. 1 team
of seniors Whitney Waters (Austin, TX) and Paige Sumida (Hilo, HI)
to rally for an exciting 8-6 victory.
Down 1-2, the Maroon and Gray needed four of the six singles
matches to pull out the upset. Unfortunately, the Sagehens had
other plans as they won at the top three slots to clinch the
victory before Bulldog junior Sara Yoshinaga (Honolulu, HI)
mustered a 7-5, 6-4 win at the No. 4 slot for Redlands' only other
point.
With the loss, Redlands (10-6, 6-1 SCIAC) sits second in the
conference standings and therefore heads into the SCIAC
Championship Tournament as the No. 2 seed. The event kicks off on
Friday at 9 a.m. at Whittier College. Redlands faces seventh-seeded
University of La Verne in the first round.
