The No. 20 University of Redlands women's tennis team advanced
to the championship match of the 2010 Southern California
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Tournament with today's
victories over the University of La Verne and
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges. The Bulldogs battle it out with
No. 7 Pomona-Pitzer Colleges for a possible share of the conference
title in tomorrow's final, which begins at 10 a.m. at Whittier
College.
In the first round of the tournament, the Maroon and Gray
cruised to a 5-0 win against La Verne. Playing to decision,
Redlands gained the first five points without even dropping a game.
After sweeping each of the doubles matches by a score of 8-0, the
team looked to senior Whitney Waters (Austin, TX) at No. 3 and
junior Sara Yoshinaga (Honolulu, HI) at No. 4 to shut out their
respective opponents, 6-0, 6-0.

During their second match of the day, the Bulldogs prevailed
over CMS in the semifinal by a score of 7-2. Redlands won two of
the three doubles matches with Waters and senior Paige Sumida
(Hilo, HI) taking down their counterparts at No. 1 by a score of
8-3 before the No. 2 duo of Yoshinaga and junior Rachael Miller
(Newport Beach, CA) secured a 9-7 victory.
In singles, Miller continued to press with her 6-0, 6-0
dismantling of her No. 2 opponent. Yoshinaga also rallied for a
solid 6-1, 6-1 victory at the No. 4 slot, while Sumida posted a
6-0, 6-3 win at the top spot.

Redlands (12-8, 8-1 SCIAC) faces off against No. 7 Pomona-Pitzer
in Saturday's championship match with hopes of clinching a share of
the coveted conference title. The Bulldogs suffered a 2-7 loss to
the Sagehens on April 10.
