In its first Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference (SCIAC) match since March 12, the No. 20 University of
Redlands women's tennis team swept the Athenas of
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on Friday afternoon by a score of
9-0.
The Bulldogs secured all three doubles points with impressive
results at every slot. The No. 1 tandem of seniors Paige Sumida
(Hilo, HI) and Whitney Waters (Austin, TX) held their opponents
scoreless in an 8-0 performance. The No. 2 duo of juniors Rachael
Miller (Newport Beach, CA) and Sara Yoshinaga (Honolulu, HI) posted
a solid 8-2 victory, with the No. 3 team of senior Sutton Anderson
(Breckenridge, CO) and sophomore Nicole Gerentine (Austin, TX)
earning an 8-3 win for the Bulldogs' third point.
In singles, it was much of the same as Waters took care of her
No. 3 opponent, 6-1, 6-1, which was followed by Miller's 6-2, 6-2
victory at the No. 2 position, giving Redlands the overall win.
However, the Maroon and Gray pressed on with a 6-1, 6-3 display
by Yoshinaga at No. 4 and a 6-3, 6-3 performance by Gerentine at
No. 6.
Sumida and Anderson both prevailed in third-set super-breakers
to earn the shutout for the Bulldogs.
Redlands (9-6, 5-0 SCIAC) hosts Whittier College on Saturday at
9:30 a.m. in its final home match of the regular season, which is
accompanied by Alumnae Day at Verdieck Courts.
