The No. 20 University of Redlands women's tennis team dominated
the visiting Poets of Whittier College in a Southern California
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) match by a score of 9-0
on Saturday. The Bulldogs dropped a total of four games in the
three doubles matches and then gave up only 11 games in the six
singles matches en route to the resounding victory.
With the win, Redlands remains undefeated in conference
competition with one match to play.
Prior to the match, the Maroon and Gray celebrated its four
seniors in a presentation of flowers and signed photos.
In doubles, the No. 2 duo of junior Rachael Miller (Newport
Beach, CA) and Sara Yoshinaga (Honolulu, HI) shut down their
opponents by a score of 8-0. Seniors Paige Sumida (Hilo, HI) and
Whitney Waters (Austin, TX) cruised to an 8-3 victory over the No.
1 tandem from Whittier, before seniors Sutton Anderson
(Breckenridge, CO) and Carrie McCann (McMinnville, OR) teamed up
for the first time this season for an 8-1 victory at No. 3.
During the singles matches, Redlands continued to roll as Waters
defeated her No. 3 opponent by scores of 6-0, 6-2. McCann
officially clinched the team victory in her debut performance at
No. 6, winning 6-0, 6-2.
Sumida, Miller, Anderson and sophomore Nicole Gerentine (Austin,
TX) also gained points for the Bulldogs with their solid showings.
Redlands (10-6, 6-0 SCIAC) looks forward to facing off against
regional rival and 12th-ranked Chapman University on Friday at 2
p.m. in Orange.
