The No. 20 University of Redlands women's tennis team dropped a
3-6 decision to regional rival and 12th-ranked Chapman University
in today's non-conference showdown in Orange.
The Bulldogs managed just one of the doubles points as the top
tandem of seniors Whitney Waters (Austin, TX) and Paige Sumida
(Hilo, HI) pulled out an exciting 9-8(4) victory.
The No. 3 team of senior Sutton Anderson (Breckenridge, CO) and
sophomore Nicole Gerentine (Austin, TX) suffered a bitter defeat in
a tiebreak, 9-8(3).
In singles, the Maroon and Gray rallied back to tie it at two
all when junior Sara Yoshinaga (Honolulu, HI) cruised to a 6-0, 6-3
win at No. 4.
However, the Panthers pushed back with a two-set victory at the
No. 1 slot, earning a 3-2 advantage.
But Waters answered for the Bulldogs with an exciting 7-5,
7-6(4) performance at the No. 3 position, tying the score at three
apiece.
Unfortunately, Redlands' celebration was cut short as Chapman
regained control with three-set wins at No. 2 and No. 6 while also
coming up victorious at the No. 5 slot.
The Bulldogs (10-7, 6-0 SCIAC) look to rebound when they battle
it out for first place in the Southern California Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference (SCIAC) against No. 8 Pomona-Pitzer Colleges on
Saturday at 9:30 a.m. in Claremont.
