The No. 23 University of Redlands women's tennis team fought to
the bitter end of today's second-round match of the 2010 NCAA
Division III Championships but fell to No. 14 Chapman University by
a score of 1-5 at Pomona College's Pauley Tennis Complex.
The Bulldogs came up short in the doubles matches and quickly
faced a three-point deficit. They earned a point at No. 4 when
junior Sara
Yoshinaga's (Honolulu, HI) opponent retired from competition
due to an injury after three games.
Senior Paige
Sumida's (Hilo, HI) illustrious career came to a close in two
sets, falling to the Panthers' No. 1 player , junior Liz Lewis, by
scores of 6-2, 6-3.
Needing every remaining match to pull out the upset, Redlands
continued to rally and forced a third set in four of the final
singles matches.
Unfortunately, time ran out on the Bulldogs, as Chapman's
freshman Genna Ford (Dallas, TX) clinched the victory at No. 5 with
a 7-6(4), 6-2 performance.
This was Redlands' 10th NCAA appearance in 11 years. The
Bulldogs finished out the 2010 campaign with a 13-10 overall
record.
Junior Rachael Miller
(Newport Beach, CA) now looks forward to competing in the NCAA
Individual Championships in singles, beginning May 28 at the
University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
