Connolly Leads Redlands Women's Soccer to Solid Victory over Leopards

Box Score

Senior forward Fionna Connolly (Salem, OR) tacked on two netters and an assist to her team-leading numbers en route to the University of Redlands' 3-0 victory over Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) foe University of La Verne on Wednesday night.  Redlands continues its recent hot streak by winning its third consecutive contest and fourth in the last five games.

The Maroon and Gray lit up the scoreboard in the 24th minute when junior midfielder Meghan King (Portland, OR) struck her career-high third goal of the season from 20 yards out. Connolly earned her fourth assist of the 2011 campaign, setting up King on the play.

Less than five minutes into the second half, Redlands attacked once again with Connolly posting her first goal of the evening. Junior midfielder Kendall Pegan (Lafayette, CA) placed a perfect corner kick for Connolly to head past the Leopard goalkeeper, giving the Bulldogs an easy 2-0 cushion.

Fellow senior forward Jaimie Morton (Boise, ID) fed Connolly at the 52nd minute to cap off UR's hat trick. Morton found her classmate just beyond 15 yards, allowing the forward to put the game out of La Verne's reach.

Junior goalkeeper Linzey Smith (Anaheim Hills, CA) notched the victory for the Bulldogs while collecting two saves. Sophomore goalkeeper Sabrina Grandke-Bawab (Kirkland, WA) also saw action in the final 45 minutes, picking up two saves as well.

The starting defensive third of senior Emily van den Bosch (Arcadia, CA), juniors Maddy Cartwright (Salt Lake City, UT) and Ellie Harrington (Seattle, WA), alongside freshman Amanda Plagge (Boise, ID), allowed only four shots-on-goal by the Leopards in an impressive effort.

Redlands out-shot La Verne, 24-9, and also dominated the corner kick totals of 9-1.

The Bulldogs (6-3-1, 3-3-0) return home to the friendly confines of Farquhar Field on Saturday when they welcome the Sagehens of Pomona-Pitzer Colleges for a 1 p.m. showdown.
