Redlands Women's Soccer Falls Short of Upset in SCIAC Postseason Tournament Semifinal

Box Score

The fourth-seeded University of Redlands women's soccer team tried to catch lightning in a bottle by taking down the top-seeded Cal Lutheran University Regals for the second time in as many years, but the squad fell short in the semifinal round of the 2011 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Postseason Tournament by a score of 1-3.

The Regals went on the offensive attack early and often in the opening 10 minutes, giving the Bulldogs several scares. In the seventh minute, Cal Lutheran ripped a shot from the right side, which ricocheted off of the post and bounced all the way across the goal line before the Redlands defense cleared the ball. Sophomore goalkeeper Sabrina Grandke-Bawab (Kirkland, WA) later came up with a huge save in the 10th minute as she stopped a one-on-one opportunity inside the six-yard line.

The SCIAC's leading goal-scorer, freshman forward Taylor Will, notched yet another goal to put Cal Lutheran up at the 26:56-mark. She caught a long through-ball and then beat Grandke-Bawab with one move for the early Regal momentum.

However, Redlands countered just 96 seconds later as the team's captain, senior forward Fionna Connolly(Salem, OR), buried arguably one of the Bulldogs' best goals of the year for the 11th score of her final campaign. She put a sweet stroke on a nicely placed ball, sending it past the keeper's head to even up the contest.

Off of the bench, senior forward Kaily Benenati (Denver, CO) gave the Maroon and Gray a great look with just 45 seconds remaining in the half by connecting on a solid header, but CLU's freshman goalkeeper Renee Standage reacted quickly for the save.

CLU's Will found the back of the net for a second time less than 10 minutes into the second stanza, slotting the ball into the Bulldogs' cage from about 30 yards out.

The Regals essentially wrapped up the game with 11 minutes remaining as junior Mayra Virgen got ahead of the UR defenders and found the back of the net with ease.

Connolly headlined the Bulldogs' efforts with the team's lone score, which improved upon her all-time record at Redlands with 76 points.

Redlands owns a 10-6-1 overall record, taking fourth in the conference standings, and now awaits the NCAA's announcement for a possible at-large bid.

Cal Lutheran (20-1), which is ranked No. 9 by D3soccer.com, hosts Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in the tournament final on Saturday. The Athenas shut down Pomona-Pitzer Colleges in tonight's other semifinal match by a score of 3-0.
