The No. 14 University of Redlands men's tennis team secured a 5-4 win over No. 20 Whittier College in an important showdown between two nationally-ranked foes of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC). The Bulldogs rallied back after winning only one doubles match, capturing the deciding point of the match with a solid lead over the Poets.
On Saturday, Whittier came out firing in doubles action, winning the first two matches to force the Bulldogs into an early deficit.
The No. 1 duo of senior Mark Bloom (San Juan Capistrano, CA) and freshman Patrick Lipscomb (Irvine, CA) gave new life to the Maroon and Gray, prevailing by a score of 8-6.
Momentum stayed with the Bulldogs as freshman Taylor Hunt (Seattle, WA) and Lipscomb came away victorious for the overall 3-2 lead. Hunt cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6, while Lipscomb put together a solid 6-3, 6-1 performance at the top spot.
Although Whittier tied it up with a win at No. 5, Redlands captured the next two points for the overall match victory. Freshman Nick Cummins (Rancho Mirage, CA) downed his No. 2 counterpart, 6-3, 6-3, and junior Anish Nanda (Cerritos, CA) earned a 7-5, 6-1 showing at No. 4.
Redlands (15-5, 3-1 SCIAC) welcomes the Stags of No. 6 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges to Verdieck Courts on Saturday, April 21, for a 4 p.m. tilt. This match was rescheduled from Friday, which was rained out.
