Box Score The University of Redlands women's soccer team played Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on Breast Cancer Awareness Night at Farquhar Field on Wednesday, and both team's defenses held strong en route to a 0-0 draw. For the Bulldogs, it was their fifth overtime contest of the season.
In a fairly quiet offensive first half, neither team garnered any close opportunities. After 45 minutes, the Athenas led the Bulldogs in shots, 5-3, and corner kicks, 4-1. U of R senior goalkeeper Sabrina Grandke-Bawab (Kirkland, WA) registered three saves during the scoreless first stanza.
In the second half, the pace of the game quickened, and both sides looked for the go-ahead goal. Redlands sophomore midfielder Savannah Laursen (Boise, ID) ripped a shot in the 66th minute and watched as it sailed over the CMS goalkeeper's head. The ball ricocheted off the crossbar, however, keeping the Bulldogs off the scoreboard.
Both teams continued pushing for the game-winner, but it was not to be found in regulation, sending the contest to sudden-death overtime.
In the first golden-goal overtime period, Bulldog sophomore goalkeeper Lexi Felix (Kailua, HI) made a game-saving stop in the ninth minute. Facing the Athena's Shaundra Ullman (Portland, OR) in a one-on-one breakaway opportunity, Felix sprawled in a full stretch to her right to make the incredible save, sending the game to a second-overtime stanza.
During the first minute of that second overtime, Redlands almost scored the game winner when a pass went across the face of goal, but no one in a Bulldog uniform could get a touch on the potential game-winner.
The game stayed scoreless for the remainder of the overtime, resulting in the 0-0 tie.
On the night, Redlands outshot CMS, 12-10, while the Athenas edged the Bulldogs in corner kicks, 5-2.
Laursen led the attack for the Maroon and Gray with three shots, while sophomore midfielder Summer Norquist (Boise, ID), sophomore forward Jennifer Franklin (Seattle, WA), and junior forward Tanya Haggen (Bellingham, WA) each notched two shots on the evening.
The Bulldogs (2-5-2, 2-2-1) return to action on Saturday afternoon when they host Pomona-Pitzer Colleges. Kickoff at Farquhar Field is scheduled for 1 p.m.
