No. 9 U of R Women's Tennis Dismisses Caltech and Occidental in Busy Saturday

The ninth-ranked University of Redlands women's tennis team took to the road for a pair of Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) matches on Saturday and came home with solid results.  The Bulldogs knocked off Caltech by a score of 8-1 before blanking Occidental College during the afternoon contest.

Against the Beavers, Redlands combined efforts in the doubles matches to take all three while giving up a total of three games.  Sophomore Julia Pollak (Holland, PA) and freshman Natalie Etchegaray (Placentia, CA) shut out their No. 2 counterparts, before junior Jessica Ly (Torrance, CA) and sophomore Ceara Sumida (Hilo, HI) followed suit with an 8-1 performance at the top slot.  Sophomore Maddie Morton (Henderson, NV) and freshman Gabriela Vasquez (Mission Viejo, CA) finished off the sweep by putting together an 8-2 victory at the No. 3 position.

With a sizeable lead, the Bulldogs continued to roll, as Pollak recorded an impressive 6-0, 6-1 showing in her debut at No. 4 and junior Paige Press (La Jolla, CA) clinched the deciding point with her 6-0, 6-0 performance at No. 5.

In addition, Morton, Sumida, and Etchegaray recorded straight-set triumphs for the Bulldogs.

After traveling from Pasadena to Eagle Rock, Redlands continued to shine with a dominating win over the Tigers of Occidental.

In doubles, the Bulldogs earned a shut-out at every position, resulting in a solid 3-0 lead.

The momentum stayed with the Maroon and Gray in singles, with no player dropping more than three games en route to straight-set triumphs at all six positions.

Sumida and Pollak officially sealed the victory by blanking their respective opponents at Nos. 3 and 4.  Morton also prevailed by scores of 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 6 position.

Redlands (17-1, 6-1 SCIAC) battles for second place in the SCIAC standings when it travels to Pomona-Pitzer Colleges on Friday, April 19, for a 2 p.m. showdown against the Sagehens.
