While playing in its second match in as many days, the No. 13 University of Redlands women's tennis team fell short of the upset of No. 8 Carnegie Mellon University (PA) on Tuesday. Despite sweeping the doubles for the third time this season, the Bulldogs dropped four three-setters in singles en route to the 3-6 defeat.
The Maroon and Gray impressed in the doubles matches, as the sophomore duo of Lauren Villanueva (El Segundo, CA) and Gabriela Vasquez (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA) initiated the scoring with an 8-3 result at No. 3. Junior Julia Pollak (Holland, PA) and sophomore Natalie Etchegaray (Placentia, CA) quickly followed suit with their 8-2 performance at the No. 2 position. Finally, the sweep was complete with senior Jessica Ly (Torrance, CA) and junior Ceara Sumida (Hilo, HI) firing off an 8-5 victory at the top slot.
Needing to win just two of the six singles matches, the Bulldogs appeared to be in prime position for the upset.
However, the Tartans had a different outcome in mind. After prevailing in straight sets at Nos. 3 and 4, CMU continued to register victories by taking all four remaining showdowns in three sets. Although Redlands captured the opening set in three of those matches, the Bulldogs could not hold on for the triumph.
Redlands (5-4) looks forward to battling it out with the University of Texas – Tyler on Saturday in an 11 a.m. match on Verdieck Courts.
