While competing in its first Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) match since February 15, the No. 13 University of Redlands women's tennis team battled it out against 12th-ranked Pomona-Pitzer Colleges in a rival showdown on Verdieck Courts. After taking an early lead in doubles, the Bulldogs pulled ahead 4-3 in singles but struggled to close out the final point en route to the difficult 4-5 loss to the Sagehens.
In doubles, the No. 2 duo of sophomore Natalie Etchegaray (Placentia, CA) and junior Julia Pollak (Holland, PA) initiated the scoring with an 8-3 decision, before senior Jessica Ly (Torrance, CA) and junior Ceara Sumida (Hilo, HI) fired off an important 8-6 victory at the top spot.
Although the Sagehens got on the board by earning the win at No. 3, the Maroon and Gray held a 2-1 advantage before the singles competition.
After Pomona-Pitzer quickly evened the count with a 6-4, 6-2 performance at the No. 4 slot, Ly answered right back for Redlands by prevailing over her No. 1 foe, 6-3, 6-1.
The teams traded punches once more, with the Bulldogs gaining a 6-1, 0-6, 6-2 triumph from sophomore Lauren Villanueva (El Segundo, CA) at No. 6.
While leading 4-3, the Maroon and Gray held out hope for the deciding point in one of the two remaining matches.
However, the visiting squad managed to pull out the comeback with a two-set effort at No. 3 before nabbing a 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 win at No. 2.
Redlands (6-6, 1-1 SCIAC) jumps back into action on Saturday with a 10 a.m. match against Occidental College on Verdieck Courts.
