Box Score The University of Redlands women's soccer team continued its 2014 journey by hosting the University of Chicago (IL) Maroons on Sunday at Farquhar Field. Despite ample scoring opportunities with an aggressive style of play, the Bulldogs fell to the first-time opponent by a score of 0-2.
The Maroons put one on the board in the 27th minute after taking advantage of a breakaway, one-on-one opportunity.
Despite recording eight shots in the first half, Redlands was unsuccessful in tying it up before halftime. One of the Bulldogs' best chances came from junior Cassie Lively (Redmond, WA),when she found spacing and fired off a laser-shot toward the upper portion of the goal. But UChicago's outstretched goalkeeper came up with the quality save.
The Bulldogs later gained three scoring opportunities within a three-minute window, as the junior trio of defender Sam Keary (Mission Viejo, CA), midfielder Savannah Laursen (Boise, ID), and forward Jen Franklin (Shoreline, WA) provided pressure against the Maroons' defense.
The U of R continued its chase for a goal in the second half by keeping an aggressive, offensive mindset. Laursen served as the team's main attacking option, as she blasted two shots in the first six minutes of second-half play. One of her shots banged off the crossbar and missed the goal-line by mere inches. Sophomore midfielder McKenzie Oliger (Seattle, WA) recorded a shot of her own just minutes after Laursen, but her attempt was stopped by the opposing goalkeeper.
The Bulldogs looked to the solid play of sophomore defender Faith Campbell (Bainbridge Island, WA) and freshman defender Erin Schlosser (Sammamish, WA) to help halt UChicago's offense for a solid 45 minutes following the first-half goal.
However, the Maroons found the back of the net in the 75th minute, pushing their lead to 2-0 for the eventual win 16 minutes later.
Overall, Redlands out-shot UChicago, 13-7.
The Bulldogs (1-1) enjoy a two-week layoff before hosting George Fox University (OR) on Sunday, September 14, at 7 p.m. on Farquhar Field
