The No. 22 University of Redlands women's tennis returned to Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) competition on Saturday by squaring off against the No. 8 Pomona-Pitzer Colleges Sagehens on Verdieck Courts. The Bulldogs came up short of the upset and fell by a score of 2-7.
The Sagehens jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead with wins at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles. Redlands rallied to cut the deficit in half with a 9-8(5) victory by the No. 2 tandem of senior Julia Pollak (Holland, PA) and junior Lauren Villanueva (El Segundo, CA).
In singles, the Bulldogs' only triumph came in the first match off the court, as Villanueva cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 performance at the No. 5 slot.
Unfortunately for the Maroon and Gray, Pomona-Pitzer prevailed in all remaining matches, leading to Redlands' first loss of the season.
The Bulldogs (5-1, 1-1 SCIAC) compete in their third match in four days when they take on Hardin-Simmons University (TX) on Monday, March 9, in a 3 p.m. non-conference bout on Verdieck Courts.
