Bulldog Women's Soccer Rallies for Late-Game Comeback in SCIAC Opener against CMS

Box Score

The University of Redlands women's soccer team embarked on its Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) journey on Wednesday night against rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges under the lights at Farquhar Field. Despite being held scoreless for the majority of the contest, the Bulldogs stayed true to their game plan and came through in dramatic fashion by inking a 2-1, overtime victory over the Athenas.

The Bulldogs lacked a consistent offensive rhythm in the first half, as they pieced together several quality combinations in Athena territory but failed to capitalize on the crafted opportunities. Senior defender Sam Keary (Mission Viejo, CA) and junior defender Sammie Burghardt (Sammamish, WA) tallied the lone shot attempts in the first half for the Maroon and Gray.

After a scoreless opening frame, the Athenas worked to grab the first score of the contest in the 55th minute.

Redlands slowly gained more offensive poise down the stretch, as five different Bulldog players fired off shots, with the lone blast on-frame coming off the foot of freshman midfielder Hayley Romo (Port Orchard, WA).

Nevertheless, the Bulldogs rose to the occasion in the 88th minute of action, as senior midfielder Savannah Laursen (Boise, ID) lofted a pinpoint pass to the feet of fellow senior midfielder Cassie Lively (Redmond, WA), who took one touch to gather the ball before blasting home the equalizer to eventually force overtime.

CMS immediately hit the ground running on the offensive end in the extra frame by notching four shots in the matter of two minutes. Senior goalkeeper Lexi Felix (Kailua, HI) had other plans for the Bulldogs, as she hauled in two highlight-reel saves, including a one-handed grab from a sitting position just in front of the goal line.

Felix's lockdown goalkeeping shifted the momentum into the Bulldogs' direction, as they drove down into Athena territory to earn a corner kick. Lively settled for the corner kick and located junior midfielder McKenzie Oliger (Seattle, WA) – who had subbed in just before the play – on the far side of the box. She casually connected on the game-winning header, which bounced off the cross bar and in, for Redlands' exciting 2-1 overtime victory.

Lively's play was on point during the battle, as she was involved with both goals of the night. Oliger led the way with two shots. In addition, Oliger matched her performance against CMS from October 1, 2014, by knocking in her second, game-winning score to defeat the Athenas in overtime fashion.

Felix earned the victory after hauling in four saves, while sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Menk (Pleasanton, CA) recorded four saves as the first-half starter.

The Bulldogs (2-0-1, 1-0-0 SCIAC) compete at home on Saturday, September 19, when they square off against the Cal Lutheran University Regals (2-3-0, 1-0-0 SCIAC) at 7 p.m.
