U of R Women's Soccer Draws with Oxy on Senior Day

Box Score

The University of Redlands women's soccer completed the 2016 campaign with a high-quality performance against the visiting Tigers of Occidental College on Saturday afternoon.  After celebrating the careers of seniors Faith Campbell (Bainbridge Island, WA), Erin Lau (Reno, NV), McKenzie Oliger (Seattle, WA), Sammie Burghardt (Gig Harbor, WA), and Kate Frame (Fox Island, WA), the Bulldogs battled through double overtime to walk away with a 2-2 draw.

The Maroon and Gray came played with emotion and determination from the opening whistle and fired off 14 first-half shots. Two of them landed in the back of the net for an early 2-0 lead through the 14th minute.  Louis Alstot dished out a beautiful corner kick in the 13th minute to freshman forward Hanya Loskutoff (Dublin, A), who one-touched it past the Oxy goalkeeper for the Bulldogs' 1-0 lead.

Less than 90 seconds later, Oliger created space on the far side of the field to loft a sweet cross into the box, where it found sophomore forward Hayley Romo (Port Orchard, WA) for a one-touch goal to the near post.

But Oxy refused to go away and played tough in the box, earning a penalty kick in the 39th minute, which was converted to cut the deficit to one.

The second half saw the Tigers create more chances on their offensive third, eventually leading to the equalizer early in the frame.

With the score tied at two, both teams fought for additional offensive opportunities, with Redlands garnering three corner kicks in a row over the course of two minutes.  Furthermore, freshman forward Gabby Hart (Sammamish, WA), sophomore forward Madison Mills (San Ramon, CA), junior defender Erin Schlosser (Sammamish, WA), Romo, and Lau each unleashed quality looks but to no avail.

The game headed into overtime with Redlands dominating the first 10-minute period with five shots, before Oxy took the upper hand in the second extra period with the same number of shots. However, neither team scored, resulting in the 2-2 draw after 110 minutes of action on Farquhar Field.

Loskutoff led the offensive charge for the Maroon and Gray by firing off seven shots, including three on-goal.

Junior goalkeeper Hannah Menk (Pleasanton, CA) provided great presence between the pipes by making 10 saves in the extended game.

Redlands finished the 2016 campaign with a 3-11-2 overall record and a 2-9-2 mark in SCIAC.
