Box Score The University of Redlands women's soccer team took to the road for the first time since September 3 by traveling to Thousand Oaks for a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) match against No. 15/17 Cal Lutheran University on Wednesday evening. In a physical and intense game, the Bulldogs battled to a 1-1 tie through the first 48 minutes of the game but gave up a late score, resulting in a 1-2 loss to the Regals.
Junior goalkeeper Hannah Menk (Pleasanton, CA) was tested early and often, as CLU came out firing with multiple shots in the first few minutes. However, she held her ground and racked up save after safe to keep the home team off the scoreboard.
The Bulldogs worked to create scoring chances when they earned a pair of corner-kick opportunities in the 29th minute but were unable to capitalize.
Unfortunately, the momentum quickly switched the other direction, as the Regals made the most of a rebounded shot to score the first goal of the game just two minutes later.
Trailing by one at halftime, Head Coach Suzette Soboti orchestrated the necessary changes, which set up an early scoring opportunity for the Bulldogs. In the 48th minute, sophomore midfielder Lauren Bay (Oak Park, CA) unleashed a shot into the top-left corner of the net to even the score at one-all. Senior defender Faith Campbell (Bainbridge Island, WA) found her teammate for the assist on the equalizing play.
Despite continuing to press offensively, Redlands struggled to find the break-through goal. However, CLU converted a penalty shot in the 82nd minute to secure the win.
While facing 18 shots, Menk finished the night with six saves in a full-game effort.
Redlands (1-3, 0-1 SCIAC) strives to return to the win column when it travels to Chapman University on Saturday, September 17, for a 7 p.m. showdown against the Panthers.
