Box Score CLAREMONT, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Soccer team opened up Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play Wednesday night, but couldn't come away with the win as they fell 2-1 on the road to Claremont-M-S.
Coming off of a Division III National Ranking of No. 5 according to the United Soccer's Coaches Association, the U of R saw their winning streak come to an end at three games as they drop to 3-1, 0-1 SCIAC.
It was a back and forth opening 45:00 minutes with a combined 19 shots being taken. The Maroon and Grey fell unfortunate though in the final minute of the first half being called for a hand ball in the box, which led to a Stag penalty kick. Bulldog keeper Seth Lawrence (Redlands, CA) guessed correctly on the ensuing shot from Harper Rubin getting his fingertips on the ball, but the shot had too much pace as it got underneath him for the go-ahead goal.
CMS got a quick goal in the second half at the 7:20 mark from Rubin who finished a one-touch volley from inside the top of the six-yard box off a cross from Liam O'Reilly. This put UR in a hole, but one they battled out from as they would convert in the 63rd minute from Peyton Menti (Seattle, WA). Ethan Kovach (Las Vegas, NV) curled a free kick into the box, which found the head of Menti who then flicked it back post cutting the deficit to one. This gave the momentum back to the Bulldogs, but that soon deteriorated as Quinn Richards (San Clemente, CA) was issued a Red Card in the 66th minute that forced UR to play a man-down the rest of the game.
But the Bulldogs continued to push getting a shot from Collin ChubbFertal (Eugene, OR) that was blocked and then a header on frame from Matt Beasley (Las Vegas, NV) with three minutes to play that was saved by CMS keeper Eduardo De Anda.
Lawrence and Aidan McSweeny (San Diego, CA) split the two halves and combined for four saves. Redlands was outshot on the game 20-14 and was edged 6-1 on corner kicks. ChubbFeratl finished with three shots and was joined by Menti with two, both being on frame including his goal and Steve Acuna who also added a couple of shots.
Redlands looks to get back on track this Saturday, September 18 when they host Caltech at Farquhar Field beginning at 3:30pm.
