U of R Women's Soccer tests No. 25 Pomona-Pitzer in 2-1 loss

Box Score

REDLANDS, Calif. – Pomona-Pitzer Colleges' pair of first-half goals proved to be enough, as the University of Redlands Women's Soccer team fell 2-1 to the No. 25 Sagehens on Wednesday night.

The score mimics the exact same finish back on September 1 when these two teams met in a non-conference match-up.  With the loss the Bulldogs drop to 2-5, 1-3 SCIAC, while Pomona-Pitzer remains without a loss moving to 7-0-1, 3-0-1 SCIAC.

The Maroon and Grey looked like they would go on top early as Eva Vlassopoulos (Portland, OR) fired off a strike from the top of the box in the 11th minute.  But her shot hit off the post, keeping the game scoreless.

Moments later, the Sagehens struck for the go-ahead goal off the foot of Taylor Venenciano.  Following a corner kick, a loose ball at the top of the box was played in, which found the head of a Bulldog defender and sent it backwards to a waiting Venenciano, who tapped it in.  Then in the 32nd minute, the Sagehens added insurance, this time Ciannah Correa finished off a sliding pass from Amanda Khu, going upper 90.

However, UR responded moments later cutting the deficit to one as Malia Kuhl (Sammamish, WA) connected for her first collegiate goal.  She was in the right spot at the right time as a ball was sent into the box by Sami Salinas (Foothill Ranch, CA) on the wing, which bounced around before finding Kuhl for the finish.

This moved the score to 2-1 at the break and that's where it stayed, as the Sagehens provided the pressure in the second half making it difficult for UR to get off any looks for the equalizer.

Kuhl finished with a pair of shots for the game and was joined by Taylor Pisan (Redmond, WA), Salinas, Kailey Hall (Tacoma, WA), and Vlassopoulos, who each added another.

The Bulldogs were outshot on the evening 26-6 with all six shots coming in the first half.  They were edged on corner kicks 5-1, but did collect 11 saves between the posts, all coming from Courtney Stewart (San Jose, CA), who now has 19 saves over her last two games.

Redlands finishes off the week on the road this Saturday, October 2, by traveling to take on Whittier College beginning at 11:00am.
