CLAREMONT, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Water Polo team (1-9) won their first game of the Tamara Perea era Friday at the Convergence Tournament as they beat Austin College 11-10. In game two the Bulldogs would fall 19-3 against Division I Long Island University (LIU).
Game 1: Austin College (W, 11-10)
The Bulldogs found themselves down 4-1 in the first quarter with the lone tally coming from Emma Parker's (Yucaipa, CA) penalty conversion. The Redlands offense, though, scored two of the next three goals pulling within two, 5-3, after Lucia Notaro (Thousand Oaks, CA) found Christine Chua (Arcadia, CA) and Parker scored her second with 5:59 left in the half.
From the end of the second quarter to the early part of the fourth quarter, Redlands held Austin scoreless and was able to get to within one, 6-5. Alyssa Sorrell (Highland, CA) and Chua each scored off assists from Parker and Teagan May (Carlsbad, CA).
In the fourth the two teams combined to find the back of the goal ten times with Chua scoring twice to tie the game at seven with 3:24 remaining in the game.
The game went back-and-forth with the score tied at 10-10 with a minute and a half remaining. Then in the final minute Notaro recorded a steal and Perea took a 30-second timeout. Then with :26 seconds to play Parker scored the game-winner.
Chua had a career game with seven goals, Sorrell had a goal, two drawn exclusions, and two steals, Notaro assisted on a pair of goals, drew two exclusions, and had a steal and in goal Aubree Nabors (Conroe, TX) got the start and made eight saves with two steals.
Game 2: RV Long Island University (L, 19-3)
In a tough game against LIU who the Bulldogs faced for the second time this season, the Maroon and Grey were able to score three times in the final three minutes. The goals came from Kennedy Mobley (Wildomar, CA), Chua, and May. Nabors played all 32:00 minutes between the posts and finished with four saves.
The Bulldogs finish off the Convergence Tournament tomorrow with division I California State University, Northridge at 11:30 a.m. and Fresno Pacific University at 3:15 p.m.
