HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. – Jay Wing completed his first and second rounds at the NCAA Men's Golf Championships Wednesday. He finished the day in a tie for 51st with a 147 (72-75).
There is a cut after 36 holes with that line being three over par (146), Wing was four, ending his championship early.
Only the six highest placed golfers who were not on a team like Wing, or not a part of a team that made the top 18 team cut, are able to continue during rounds three and four.
He had a super clean first 11 holes during round one Tuesday, posting 10 pars and a birdie on five. He had two bogeys on the back side after play was halted due to weather after he finished his 10th hole. Play was resumed early Wednesday morning.
Starting round two Wing looked to be out of contention for the cut as he was already four over par after only four holes thanks to a triple bogey on his first hole, 11, and a bogey on 13. An eagle on 14, and birdies on 16 and 17, though, brought him back down to par for the round.
Those birdies, however, were the last of the day, and three bogeys down the stretch pushed him to three over, one more than he could be to advance to the final two rounds.
Wing finishes his first year with the Bulldogs with All-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) honors and a top 21 national ranking despite carrying most of the load for the team. He finishes his season with a 71.44 scoring average which is the fourth-lowest in single-season program history. He has one final year of eligibility.
