Day Two of the Lee Fulmer Memorial Tournament Offers Excitement for Every Team

The fun of the 61st Annual Lee Fulmer Memorial Tournament continued on Friday with competitive games in every match-up. Two hard-fought semifinal contests highlighted a full day of competition, as Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges and Whitman College (WA) move on to Saturday's championship game.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps vs. Whitworth
In the 6 p.m. game, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps took down the 15th-ranked Pirates of Whitworth University (WA) by a score of 73-68. After falling behind by 11 points, Whitworth battled back to pull ahead by two off of a three-pointer by David Riley with 4:48 to go in the second period. However, less than two minutes later a jumper and free throw by Chris Blees put CMS ahead for good. The Stags had four players in double figures, with Michael Bagby and Blees contributing 16 points each. Whitworth gained 22 points from David Riley, including five three-pointers. CMS faces Whitman College in the championship at 8 p.m. on Saturday, while Whitworth competes for third place against UC Santa Cruz at 6 p.m.

Whitman vs. UC Santa Cruz
During Friday's fourth game, Whitman College (WA) held onto an early lead to defeat the Banana Slugs of UC Santa Cruz, 100-87. Down by four points at the half, Santa Cruz pulled within two with 4:39 to go when Ryan Matsuoka scored a lay-up. However, Whitman responded with a 10-point advantage just two minutes later and never looked back. Whitman relied on five players in double figures, with Chris Faidley scoring 21 points to pace the Missionaries. Brandon Shaw added 19 points while Jordan Wheeler and David Michaels chipped in 15 points. Max Adcox rounded out the top scorers with 13 points. Santa Cruz was led by Matsuoka, who scored 25 points, including four three-pointers. Daniel Bryant provided 21 off of 8-for-11 shooting while pulling down nine boards. Scotty Buck contributed 19 points for the Banana Slugs. Whitman advances to the championship game against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 8 p.m. on Saturday. Santa Cruz competes for third place against Whitworth University (WA) at 6 p.m.

Cal State East Bay vs. Southwestern College
Cal State East Bay held on for an exciting finish over Southwestern College (AZ) in the first game of the day. Despite a 13-point lead with less than a minute to go, the Pioneers had to battle off a persistent Southwestern team to grab a 74-71 victory. The Eagles sank three shots from long range in the waning seconds while East Bay missed four free throws. With the game within reach, Southwestern put up a three-pointer at the buzzer that just missed, preventing an overtime scare for the Pioneers. East Bay relied on Fabien Baker to lead the team with 30 points off of 14-for-19 shooting. He also added eight rebounds. Southwestern gained 23 points from Daniel Stanton, which included a perfect 5-for-5 from long range. CSUEB now faces Chapman University in the consolation championship on Saturday at 4 p.m., while Southwestern takes on host Redlands for seventh place at 2 p.m. 

University of Redlands vs. Chapman University
The University of Redlands and Chapman University squared off in the 4 p.m. game with the Panthers prevailing over their familiar foe, 72-57. Chapman built a five-point lead late in the first half and then stretched it to 11 at the 14-minute mark of the second period. Redlands struggled offensively late in the game, shooting just 26%, and never recovered. Ben Ricard paced the Panthers with 22 points off of 11-for-15 shooting. Justin Riley offered 19 while Kyle Wood chipped in 15. Redlands looked to Matt Dietrich and Stephen Call to lead the team with 11 points each, as Patrick Coffey came up with 10 points. Chapman competes against Cal State East By in the consolation championship at 4 p.m. on Saturday. Redlands plays Southwestern for seventh place at 2 p.m.
