On Sunday, the University of Redlands men's basketball
team began a stretch of three road games with a non-conference tilt
against No. 19 Chapman University. Despite trailing by just one at
the half, the Bulldogs struggled to defend the Panthers'
69.9% second-half shooting and lost by a score of 57-76.
Redlands faced an eight-point deficit with 6:05 to play in the
opening period. Chapman's offense went cold and turned the
ball over in the final minutes while the Maroon and Gray converted
its free throws to pull within one at the break.
The second half was highlighted by Chapman's impressive
shooting (16-for-23), which included a perfect performance from
three-point range (3-for-3).
Falling victim to the Panther defense, the Bulldogs amassed
nine turnovers in less than eight minutes to start the second half,
which quickly led to a 23-point hole. Despite their efforts, they
never recovered.
The Redlands bench rallied for 28 points, with junior center Jordan
Sanvictores (Redwood City, CA) contributing a team-high 14 points.
Senior guard Andrew Maertens (Salt Lake City, UT) chipped in 11
points, including two three-pointers, as the only other
double-digit scorer.
The Maroon and Gray shot 43.5%, compared to the Panthers'
mark of 54.3%. Chapman also went to the line 29 times, converting
21 of those opportunities, while the Bulldogs went 11-for-15 from
the charity stripe.
Redlands returns to action on Thurs., Dec. 31, with a 2 p.m. game
at The Master's College in Santa Clarita.
