Chapman Rolls Past George Fox in Tournament
Final
The University of Redlands captured a solid 95-68 victory over the
Kingsmen of Cal Lutheran University in the third-place game of the
62nd Annual Lee Fulmer Memorial Men's Basketball Tournament.
Following last night's heartbreaking overtime loss, the
Bulldogs rallied for an impressive display of shooting and defense
en route to the lopsided win.
After a tie score at two, the Maroon and Gray went on an 11-point
scoring spree as the Kingsmen struggled with turnovers.
Although Cal Lutheran trailed by just eight points with 9:58
remaining in the opening period, the Bulldogs held their opponents
at bay and stretched their lead to 50-32 at the break.
From there, it was all Redlands, which owned at least an 18-point
advantage during the second half and eventually made it 27 to
finish the game at 95-68.
Senior guard Andrew Maertens (Salt Lake City, UT) lit up the
scoreboard with his 20 points, going 7-for-12 from the floor. He
also drained three three-pointers and hit 3-of-4 free-throws.
Freshman guard Tristan Kirk (Redlands, CA) chipped in 12 points as
the only other double-digit scorer for the Bulldogs, with 10 other
players contributing at least two points.
In other action, the Panthers of Chapman University cruised to a
73-45 victory over George Fox University in tonight's
championship game.
Chapman took an early 4-2 lead and never looked back, relying on
solid shooting and tenacious rebounding. The Bruins struggled to
connect at the basket, shooting just 29.4% in the game. The
Panthers also won the battle of the boards with a 45 to 26
advantage.
Junior forward Justin Riley (San Dimas, CA) proved his Tournament
MVP honors for the third night in a row by scoring 20 points to go
along with eight rebounds. Senior forward Jared Kaiser (Lake
Forest, CA) chipped in 12 points and nine boards, while nine other
Panther players notched at least one point in the victory.
George Fox gained 14 points and five rebounds from senior post Alex
Stockner (Monmouth, OR).
Menlo College pulled out a tight 79-75 victory over UC Santa Cruz
in the consolation final, rallying back in the final seconds of
regulation to send the game to overtime.
Sophomore post Andrew Young (Sacramento, CA) hit a jumper to start
the extra period and the Oaks never looked back en route to the
exciting victory.
Menlo gained strong performances from each of its starters, with
senior guard Tim Kees (Oakland, CA) leading the charge with 17
points and 10 rebounds. Junior post Nick McCullar (Lawndale, CA)
chipped in 14 and junior guard Julian Harris (Fremont, CA) added
12, while junior guard Drew Davis (Windosr, CA) and Young
contributed 10 points each.
Freshman guard Alex Abarca (San Jose, CA) and junior guard Darrin
Lew (Walnut, CA) each contributed 12 points for Santa Cruz. Junior
wing Ryan Matsuoka (Cupertino, CA) rounded out the top scorers with
10.
In the seventh-place game, the Bearcats of Willamette University
relied on the stellar play of senior post Cameron Mitchell
(Portland, OR) to propel them to an 87-62 victory over West Coast
Baptist College. He came up with 27 points, going 12-for-27, to go
along with 23 rebounds, for an amazing double-double.

score 15 points, while junior wing Robbie Kunke (Clackamas, OR)
added 11 and sophomore post Taylor Mounts (Kailua, HI) chipped in
