The University of Redlands men's basketball team put up a
valiant fight against the first-place team in the Southern
California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC),
Pomona-Pitzer Colleges, on Wednesday night, but the Sagehens edged
the Maroon and Gray by a 64-55 final in the end.
Pomona-Pitzer built up a 16-point lead in the first half, but
Redlands slowly chipped away at the advantage and slimmed it down
to four at the half's end. A back-and-forth battle ensued in
the beginning of the second half, which led to the Bulldogs tying
it up at 38 with 12:48 left in the game. The Sagehens then regained
the lead and eventually held on for the win. Junior guard Patrick
Coffey (San Carlos, CA) drained a three-pointer with 2:13 remaining
to bring the Bulldogs within two, but two consecutive Pomona-Pitzer
threes put the game out of reach.
Coffey, who tied his career high in points on Saturday against
Whittier College with 27, scored more than 20 points for the second
consecutive game as he posted 22 on 8-of-15 shooting. He also
contributed four rebounds and two assists toward the
Bulldogs' cause.
For the eighth game in a row, sophomore forward Matt Dietrich
(Phoenix, AZ) reached a double-digit point total, recording 11 on
the evening. Starting in the post, sophomore center Andrew Mills
(Newcastle, WA) patrolled the boards and came up with six
rebounds.
Redlands (7-14, 3-7 SCIAC) visits the University of La Verne on
Saturday for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off with the Leopards. The Bulldogs
return to Currier Gym on Wednesday when they match up against the
Kingsmen of Cal Lutheran University at 7:30 p.m.
