The University of Redlands women's water polo team won two
of the three games in which it played on Saturday in the Redlands
Mini-Tournament No. 2 at the Thompson Aquatic Center.
At 9 a.m., the Bulldogs started off with a regional matchup against
UC Santa Cruz, and the Banana Slugs edged the Maroon and Gray in
the end, 8-7. Senior center Sam Greenawalt (Riverside, CA) netted
three goals to pace the offense, while sophomore driver Chandler
Weeks (Palm Desert, CA), senior center Jen Caron (San Dimas, CA),
senior driver Claire Quinn (Fresno, CA) and freshman center Jaime
Nippert (Gresham, OR) scored one apiece. In goal, junior goalkeeper
Whitney Schieler (Porterville, CA) had an impressive outing, saving
a tournament-high seven shots.
Redlands bounced back with an 11-6 trouncing of Azusa Pacific
University in its noon match. Greenawalt found the back of the net
four times, leading all scorers. Quinn provided three goals while
Weeks scored twice. In addition, freshman driver Joy Corona (Lake
Bluff, IL) and Nippert each snuck the ball past Azusa
Pacific's goalkeeper once. Tending the net, Schieler kept the
Cougar offense at bay, saving six shots.
NCAA Division I's Siena College (NY) jumped out to an early
2-0 lead in the Maroon and Gray's final game of the
afternoon, but the Bulldogs held the Saints in check the rest of
the way and ended up coming out on top, 10-8. Greenawalt and Quinn
each supplied four goals for the team lead while freshman driver
Casey Sripramong (Glendale, CA) and Caron posted one apiece.
Schieler played the entirety of the contest in goal, corralling six
saves.
Redlands (3-6) takes next weekend off before participating in the
Cal Lutheran Tournament in Thousand Oaks from March 7-8.
