The 19th-ranked University of Redlands baseball team won both
games in its Saturday doubleheader against Occidental College in
Eagle Rock, winning the first tilt, 8-5, and the second contest,
10-1.
Junior pitcher/infielder Michael Lessig (Fountain Hills, AZ) got
the starting nod in the first game and kept the Tiger batters in
check, allowing just one earned run in five innings of duty.
Redlands' offense was led by junior catcher Jefre Johnson
(Canby, OR), who had an electric outing at the plate. Both hits he
recorded resulted in home runs as he finished the game batting
2-for-4 with six RBI and two runs scored. Also flashing power was
senior outfielder Jordan Snider (Temecula, CA) as he lifted a
two-run home run over the centerfield wall in the second
inning.
Senior infielder Tony Stutevoss (Portland, OR) used his fleet feet
to navigate his way around the bags, going 2-for-2 on steal
attempts.
Lessig (1-1) picked up the win on the afternoon while
Occidental's Matthew Jones was handed the loss.
Game two of the twin bill proved to be nearly as lopsided as
Redlands' 9-1 victory on Friday against the Tigers as the
Bulldogs shelled Occidental's pitching staff during the
middle three innings and won, 10-1.
Freshman pitcher Josh Snyder (Englewood, CO) took to the hill as
the starter for the second game and pitched a gem, allowing a
paltry one earned run in five full innings of action. He also
averaged just more than a strikeout an inning as he got his
opponents out on strikes on seven occasions.
Occidental held a 1-0 lead through the third inning and appeared to
have found an answer to a Bulldog offense that had been clicking on
all cylinders the past two games. Senior pitcher/infielder Evan
Dunn (Portland, OR) quickly shifted the momentum in the top of the
fourth, however, when he blasted a three-run home run to right
field, scoring Snider and senior outfielder Corey Vane (Simi
Valley, CA). Dunn finished the second game with a solid 2-for-4
showing from the dish with one run scored and five RBI.
Redlands' highest hit total of the contest came from senior
outfielder Matt Goldstein (Lincoln, CA) who chalked up three.
Additional two-hit performances came from Stutevoss, Vane and
senior utility player Will Wetmore (Santa Cruz, CA).
Snyder (1-0) won his first non-exhibition collegiate start for the
Bulldogs while Noel Banuelos shouldered the loss for the
Tigers.
Redlands (4-2, 3-0 SCIAC) travels north for a three-game weekend
series against Cal State East Bay later this week. The first game
is set for Friday at 2 p.m.
