Redlands Baseball Swept by No. 11 Pomona-Pitzer

The University of Redlands baseball team suffered two losses on Saturday, dropping decisions of 2-11 and 0-9, respectively, to 11th-ranked Pomona-Pitzer Colleges in Claremont.

Redlands went up early in the first game when sophomore first baseman Manny Cardeiro (San Diego, CA) laced a single to left field, driving in senior outfielder/catcher Kyle Rizzo (Redlands, CA).

Pomona-Pitzer evened the score in the bottom of the second with a Nick Frederick home run to right field.

After three scoreless innings, the Bulldogs hopped back out in front in the top of the fifth. Senior outfielder Jordan Snider (Temecula, CA) singled to left field, and in the ensuing at bat, senior pitcher/infielder Evan Dunn (Portland, OR) ripped a double to left, plating Snider.

The Sagehens would go on to score 10 unanswered runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings as Pomona-Pitzer would win handily.

Snider had the lone multi-hit outing for the Bulldogs, going 2-for-4 with one run.

Freshman pitcher Josh Snyder (Englewood, CO) sustained the loss for the Maroon and Gray after tossing 6.2 innings and allowing seven earned runs. Tom Church notched the victory for the Sagehens, pitching a complete game.

Redlands could not stop Pomona-Pitzer in the second contest either as the Sagehens rolled, 9-0.

Early on, the Bulldogs kept the Sagehens at bay, allowing just one run in the first three frames. The home team, however, would go on to score two in the fourth, two in the fifth, three in the sixth and one in the eighth, sealing the triumph.

With one out in the ninth, the Maroon and Gray made a push as sophomore outfielder Brandon Owashi (San Diego, CA) and junior catcher Jefre Johnson (Canby, OR) each singled, but two consecutive outs quashed any chance of pushing a runner across.

Rizzo, Owashi, Johnson, senior first baseman Matt Hughes (Westminster, CA) and senior pitcher/infielder Evan Dunn (Portland, OR) each notched a hit for the Bulldogs in the loss.

Junior pitcher/infielder Michael Lessig (Fountain Hills, AZ) was tagged with the loss, surrendering five runs and striking out four in five innings of duty on the hill. Zachary Mandelblatt earned the win for the Sagehens.

On Friday, Pomona-Pitzer took the first game of the series with a 21-11 victory.

Redlands (15-9, 6-3 SCIAC) looks for a chance for redemption this weekend when it plays a pivotal series against Cal Lutheran University. Friday's game starts at 3 p.m. in Thousand Oaks before the two teams travel eastward to Redlands for an 11 a.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
