The University of Redlands women's water polo team found
itself on the losing end of a defensive stalwart against Cal
Lutheran University, falling, 5-7, in Thousand Oaks on
Wednesday.
Senior driver Claire Quinn (Fresno, CA) scored the game's
first goal with 6:32 left to play in the first quarter, but the
Regals responded with three unanswered scores to put the tally at
1-3 heading into the second quarter. Redlands rallied with three
straight goals in the second frame as senior center Sam Greenawalt
(Riverside, CA) and senior center Jen Caron (San Dimas, CA) each
found the back of the net. Cal Lutheran would bury a shot with 27
seconds remaining in the half to tie the game at four heading into
the break.
Both teams challenged each other defensively in the third quarter
as the Regals scored the period's lone goal. The Maroon and
Gray mounted a comeback as Quinn brought the score within one, but
Cal Lutheran's Meredith Butte put the game out of reach with
a goal just before the two-minute mark in the fourth period.
Guarding the Bulldog net, junior goalkeeper Whitney Schieler
(Porterville, CA) posted five saves.
Redlands (10-15, 2-2 SCIAC) looks for redemption this Saturday as
it hosts Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges at the Thompson Aquatic
Center in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
(SCIAC) match. Game time is slated for 11 a.m. Prior to the start
of the game, the team will honor its four seniors.
