The University of Redlands women's soccer team prevailed over the Sagehens of Pomona-Pitzer Colleges in a 2-1 overtime victory on Wednesday afternoon in Claremont.
With the win, the Bulldogs continue making their way up the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) standings as they improve to 5-3 for third place, while surpassing the .500 mark with a 7-6 overall record.
The Maroon and Gray initiated the scoring as senior defender Breann Puchalski (Redlands, CA) took advantage of a penalty kick at the 26th minute and recorded her first netter of the year.
Pomona-Pitzer bounced back by tying the ball game at the 35:03 mark when senior forward Jenn Nishioka (Honolulu, HI) collected a pass from senior midfielder Kathleen Kerr (Canyon Country, CA) and found the back of the net.
The match remained knotted at 1-1 through the end of regulation and forced the game into overtime. The Bulldogs broke the stalemate with 38 seconds left in the extra period as junior forward Maddy Phillips (Seattle, WA) iced the victory with her third goal of the season. Sophomore defender Maddy Cartwright (Salt Lake City, UT) tossed in her inaugural assist of the 2010 campaign.
The combination of sophomore goalkeepers Rachel Foreman (San Jose, CA) and Linzey Smith (Anaheim Hills, CA) allowed only one score in over 99 minutes of play. They each made two saves while patrolling the Redlands goal.
The Bulldogs outshot the Sagehens by more than double, earning a 13-6 margin, which included seven shots on goal. Redlands also dominated the corner kick plays with five chances, compared to Pomona-Pitzer's single opportunity.
After this Saturday's bye, Redlands returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 20, at Farquhar Field as it takes on the Athenas of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges with a 7 p.m. kickoff. Bulldog fans are encouraged to don their maroon apparel as the team promotes this year's "maroon-out" game.
