The University of Redlands women's lacrosse team kicked
off the 2010 season with a resounding win in the first-ever
Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC)
game, dismantling the visiting Tigers of Occidental College by a
score of 18-3 on Wednesday night at Farquhar Field. The Bulldogs
controlled the game from the opening draw and never looked back as
10 different players found the back of the Occidental net.
Redlands posted its first goal just four minutes into the game when
freshman attack player Aimee Dewan (Alamo, CA) converted a
free-position shot.
The team rattled off five more scores in just over eight minutes to
take a 6-0 lead.
Occidental put one on the board at 15:19, but then the Bulldogs
responded with 10 unanswered goals, including three straight by
junior midfielder Christy Smith (St. Louis Park, MN), to close out
the half.
Utilizing a variety of players, including a second goalkeeper,
Redlands worked on possessing the ball for the final 30 minutes.
With two more scores by each team, the final tally ended up at 18-3
in favor of the Maroon and Gray.
Sophomore goalkeeper Ana Martinez (Pleasanton, CA) notched the win
for Redlands, tallying two saves in just over 45 minutes of
action.
Smith finished with four goals, three draw controls, and three
ground balls. Deway provided a hat trick in her collegiate debut,
while senior midfielder Haley Kern (Portland, OR) corralled a
game-high five draw controls.
The Bulldogs (1-0) travel to the University of Dallas (TX) for an
11 a.m. game against the Crusaders on Saturday. Redlands also takes
on Colorado College while in Dallas, competing at 11 a.m. on
Sunday.
