Bulldog Women's Lacrosse Pounds Carthage, 20-5

The University of Redlands women's lacrosse team took on the Lady Reds of Carthage College (WI) in today's non-conference match at Farquhar Field and prevailed by a resounding score of 20-5.

Former Bulldogs Lauren Hume '05 and Emily Goetz '04 now serve as the Lady Reds' head coach and graduate assistant coach, respectively.

In today's action, Redlands initiated the scoring when junior midfielder Christy Smith (St. Louis Park, MN) found the back of the net on a free-position shot with 27:12 left in the opening period.

However, Carthage evened the score with a goal by junior midfielder Kate Flanagan (Wheeling, IL).

The Bulldogs countered with four unanswered goals to take a 5-1 lead with 19:04 remaining in the first half. During this span, sophomore midfielder Megan Prickett (Poway, CA) rattled off back-to-back goals in less than three minutes.

The Lady Reds continued to fight with consecutive goals of their own to pull within two at 5-3.

But Redlands broke away by scoring six goals, compared to only two by Carthage, to enter the break with an 11-5 lead. During the final 37:57 of the game, the Maroon and Gray exploded for 13 goals while holding Carthage scoreless.

The Bulldogs gained five goals apiece from senior midfielder Haley Kern (Portland, OR) and Smith, while sophomore attack player Blair Callaghan (Tacoma, WA) provided two assists. Freshman defender Jennifer Bryant (Kennebunkport, ME) racked up eight ground balls and four caused turnovers.

Sophomore goalkeeper Ana Martinez (Pleasanton, CA) patrolled the Redlands goal and made three saves in 45:15 of action. Freshman back-up Stephanie Honeycutt (Portland, OR) preserved the second-half shutout for the Bulldogs.

Carthage's Flanagan and freshman midfielder Karissa Secora (Brookfield, WI) provided two goals apiece.
