The University of Redlands women's lacrosse team took on the
Lady Reds of Carthage College (WI) in today's non-conference match
at Farquhar Field and prevailed by a resounding score of 20-5.
Former Bulldogs Lauren Hume '05 and Emily Goetz '04 now serve as
the Lady Reds' head coach and graduate assistant coach,
respectively.
In today's action, Redlands initiated the scoring when junior
midfielder Christy Smith (St. Louis Park, MN) found the back of the
net on a free-position shot with 27:12 left in the opening period.
However, Carthage evened the score with a goal by junior
midfielder Kate Flanagan (Wheeling, IL).
The Bulldogs countered with four unanswered goals to take a 5-1
lead with 19:04 remaining in the first half. During this span,
sophomore midfielder Megan Prickett (Poway, CA) rattled off
back-to-back goals in less than three minutes.
The Lady Reds continued to fight with consecutive goals of their
own to pull within two at 5-3.
But Redlands broke away by scoring six goals, compared to only
two by Carthage, to enter the break with an 11-5 lead. During the
final 37:57 of the game, the Maroon and Gray exploded for 13 goals
while holding Carthage scoreless.
The Bulldogs gained five goals apiece from senior midfielder
Haley Kern (Portland, OR) and Smith, while sophomore attack player
Blair Callaghan (Tacoma, WA) provided two assists. Freshman
defender Jennifer Bryant (Kennebunkport, ME) racked up eight ground
balls and four caused turnovers.
Sophomore goalkeeper Ana Martinez (Pleasanton, CA) patrolled the
Redlands goal and made three saves in 45:15 of action. Freshman
back-up Stephanie Honeycutt (Portland, OR) preserved the
second-half shutout for the Bulldogs.
Carthage's Flanagan and freshman midfielder Karissa Secora
(Brookfield, WI) provided two goals apiece.
Redlands (3-1) welcomes Sewanee (TN) to Farquhar Field for
tomorrow night's 7 p.m. non-conference showdown.
