The University of Redlands women's water polo team won its first
game of the year on Saturday afternoon at the Chapman Tournament in
Orange with a 21-2 triumph over Carthage College (WI) and followed
it up with a 22-3 victory over Chatham College (PA).
Freshman driver Jill Stein (Palm Desert, CA) tapped the Lady
Reds' defense for four goals to lead the Bulldogs over Carthage.
Freshman drivers Moana Tuipulotu (Lahaina, HI) and Lindsey
Zehner (Portland, OR), freshman center Mandy Nussbaum (Bellevue,
WA), junior driver Tory Haynes (Valley Center, CA) and freshman
center Rebecca Moore (San Diego, CA) each scored twice, while
freshman driver Kara Parker (Houston, TX), sophomore centers Jaime
Nippert (Gresham, OR) and Jamie Paul (Boring, OR), freshman driver
Stephanie Taylor (Sacramento, CA), sophomore driver Joy Corona
(Lake Bluff, IL), junior driver Chandler Weeks (Palm Desert, CA)
and senior driver Jade Valenzuela (Indio, CA) each rattled the back
of the cage once. In between the pipes, senior goalkeeper Whitney
Schieler (Porterville, CA) made four saves before handing the
goalkeeping duties over to junior goalkeeper Tiana Singley
(Benicia, CA) and freshman goalkeeper Cecile Gernez (Mountain View,
CA). Singley made two stops, while Gernez turned away one shot.
Freshman driver Georgia Tunioli (Riverside, CT) broke out for
five goals against Chatham, leading the Bulldogs to another
lopsided win. Weeks and Tuipulotu contributed four and three
scores, respectively, while Moore and Parker added a pair of goals.
Nippert, Paul, Corona, Zehner, Haynes and Stein produced one score
apiece. Schieler turned away a team-high nine shots protecting the
Redlands net, and Singley and Gernez made four and two saves,
respectively, in spot duty.
Redlands (2-6, 0-0 SCIAC) hosts the Redlands Mini-Tournament No.
2 tomorrow (March 14) at the Thompson Aquatic Center. The Bulldogs
square off with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges at 9 a.m. and end
the afternoon with a 3 p.m. showdown against Cal State Northridge.
