Redlands Women's Water Polo Downs Carthage, Chatham at Chapman Tournament

The University of Redlands women's water polo team won its first game of the year on Saturday afternoon at the Chapman Tournament in Orange with a 21-2 triumph over Carthage College (WI) and followed it up with a 22-3 victory over Chatham College (PA).

Freshman driver Jill Stein (Palm Desert, CA) tapped the Lady Reds' defense for four goals to lead the Bulldogs over Carthage. Freshman drivers Moana Tuipulotu (Lahaina, HI) and Lindsey Zehner (Portland, OR), freshman center Mandy Nussbaum (Bellevue, WA), junior driver Tory Haynes (Valley Center, CA) and freshman center Rebecca Moore (San Diego, CA) each scored twice, while freshman driver Kara Parker (Houston, TX), sophomore centers Jaime Nippert (Gresham, OR) and Jamie Paul (Boring, OR), freshman driver Stephanie Taylor (Sacramento, CA), sophomore driver Joy Corona (Lake Bluff, IL), junior driver Chandler Weeks (Palm Desert, CA) and senior driver Jade Valenzuela (Indio, CA) each rattled the back of the cage once. In between the pipes, senior goalkeeper Whitney Schieler (Porterville, CA) made four saves before handing the goalkeeping duties over to junior goalkeeper Tiana Singley (Benicia, CA) and freshman goalkeeper Cecile Gernez (Mountain View, CA). Singley made two stops, while Gernez turned away one shot.

Freshman driver Georgia Tunioli (Riverside, CT) broke out for five goals against Chatham, leading the Bulldogs to another lopsided win. Weeks and Tuipulotu contributed four and three scores, respectively, while Moore and Parker added a pair of goals. Nippert, Paul, Corona, Zehner, Haynes and Stein produced one score apiece. Schieler turned away a team-high nine shots protecting the Redlands net, and Singley and Gernez made four and two saves, respectively, in spot duty.

Redlands (2-6, 0-0 SCIAC) hosts the Redlands Mini-Tournament No. 2 tomorrow (March 14) at the Thompson Aquatic Center. The Bulldogs square off with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges at 9 a.m. and end the afternoon with a 3 p.m. showdown against Cal State Northridge.
