The University of Redlands women's water polo team hosted the
second Redlands Mini-Tournament of the season on Sunday at the
Thompson Aquatic Center and garnered an 8-6 win against
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in non-conference action while
suffering a tough 8-10 loss to Cal State Northridge.
Against the Athenas, the Maroon and Gray rallied for an 8-6
victory to start the tournament off on a positive note. The team
looked to a well-balanced attack with seven different players
finding the back of the net. Sophomore center Jaime Nippert
(Gresham, OR) led the Bulldogs with two scores, while freshman
driver Moana Tuipulotu (Lahaina, HI), sophomore center Jamie Paul
(Boring, OR), freshman driver Georgia Tunioli (Riverside, CT),
sophomore driver Joy Corona (Lake Bluff, IL), freshman driver
Lindsey Zehner (Portland, OR), and freshman driver Jill Stein (Palm
Desert, CA) each tallied a goal. Senior goalkeeper Whitney Schieler
(Porterville, CA) made five stops while patrolling the Bulldog
cage.
In other action, Cal State Northridge thumped Colorado State by
a score of 11-1. Colorado State then rallied back for a 10-7 win
over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
Redlands returned to the pool at 3 p.m. for a non-conference
showdown against Cal State Northridge, which sits at No. 10 on the
Collegiate Water Polo Association's Varsity Poll. The Bulldogs
faced an early deficit but battled it out with the Matadors before
suffering an 8-10 loss. Nippert continued to lead the Redlands
offense with four goals, while Tuipulotu added two scores. Junior
driver Chandler Weeks (Palm Desert, CA), and freshman center Mandy
Nussbaum (Bellevue, WA) each provided one goal in the defeat.
Schieler continued to patrol the goal for Redlands by making five
saves.
Redlands (3-7) returns to action on Friday, March 19, when it
serves as a host of the Cal Baptist Lancer Tournament. The Bulldogs
take on Fresno Pacific at 3 p.m., which is followed by a 6 p.m.
showdown against Division III foe Macalester College (MN).
