The No. 17 University of Redlands women's tennis team cruised
past the visiting Banana Slugs of UC Santa Cruz in today's regional
showdown by a score of 8-1.
The Bulldogs won all three matches in doubles to propel them to
victory.
After the No. 2 duo of juniors Rachael Miller (Newport Beach,
CA) and Sara Yoshinaga (Honolulu, HI) rolled to an 8-3 victory, the
No. 3 tandem of senior Sutton Anderson (Breckenridge, CO) and
sophomore Nicole Gerentine (Austin, TX) eked out a 9-7 win.
Then, the top team of seniors Paige Sumida (Hilo, HI) and
Whitney Waters (Austin, TX) defeated their counterparts by a score
of 8-6 to earn the sweep for the Maroon and Gray.
Redlands secured the team victory with stellar play by Waters at
No. 3 (6-0, 6-2) and Gerentine (6-2, 6-2) at No. 6.
In addition, Sumida came up with a 6-4, 0-6 11-9 win at No. 1,
while Miller took down her opponent at No. 2 by scores of 7-5, 6-2.
Finally, Yoshinaga clinched the team's eighth point with her 3-6,
6-0, 7-6(4) showing at No. 4.
The Bulldogs (8-5) face off against No. 9 Gustavus Adolphus
College (MN) in a home match on Monday at 3 p.m.
