The University of Redlands women's water polo team downed NCAA
Division II's Cal State San Bernardino, 13-12, Wednesday
afternoon in San Bernardino in sudden-death overtime.
Sophomore driver Casey Sripramong (Glendale, CA) found the back
of the net in the sudden-death overtime period after Cal State San
Bernardino rang a shot off the post and subsequently turned the
ball over after another scoring opportunity.
The Bulldogs started off on a tear, scoring four of the game's
first five goals. Misty Vu, Emily Hove and Kaitlin Hartman each
rattled the back of the cage for the Coyotes in the third period,
but Redlands still held a 9-8 edge heading into the final quarter.
Cal State San Bernardino gained its first lead of the game in
the fourth, and senior goalkeeper Whitney Schieler (Porterville,
CA) prevailed in a potentially catastrophic 1-v-1 situation to keep
the Coyote advantage at one. Sripramong tied the score with 15
ticks remaining in regulation to force the contest into overtime.
Vu struck first in the first overtime, but the Maroon and Gray
scored twice to take a 12-11 edge into the second overtime period.
Vu provided heroics for the Coyotes once more, tying the game at 12
with 26 seconds remaining in the second overtime. Sripramong would
then seal Redlands' victory with a golden goal after two periods of
extra time.
Sophomore center Jaime Nippert (Gresham, OR) paced the Bulldogs
with four goals, while Sripramong netted a hat trick. Junior driver
Chandler Weeks (Palm Desert, CA) and freshman driver Jill Stein
(Palm Desert, CA) offered a pair of goals apiece, while freshman
driver Moana Tuipuloto (Lahaina, HI) and sophomore driver Joy
Corona (Lake Bluff, IL) each scored once.
In between the pipes for the Maroon and Gray, Schieler authored
a virtuoso performance, making 15 saves in the team's winning
effort.
