The No. 15 University of Redlands baseball team lost to
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges by a 4-11 final in Southern
California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action
Sunday afternoon in Claremont.
The Stags pounded out 16 hits and scored 11 runs before Redlands
got on the board in the ninth.
The Bulldogs used three hits and two walks in the top of the
ninth to erase the shutout. Junior leftfielder Brandon Owashi (San
Diego, CA), graduate student designated hitter Brett Sandford
(Santa Barbara, CA), senior catcher Jefre Johnson (Canby, OR) and
sophomore pinch hitter Ben Saunders (New River, AZ) all scored as
the Maroon and Gray took four back. The deficit, however, was too
large to overcome as Redlands could not stop a red-hot
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps team.
After the entire starting rotation saw playing time in
Saturday's loss against No. 12 Pomona-Pitzer Colleges, the Bulldogs
counted on four different arms to face the Stags. Junior pitcher
Derek Johnson (Canby, OR) lost for the second time in as many days,
dropping to 10-2 on the year. He allowed four runs, none of which
were earned, on four hits and struck out one in three innings of
action. Freshman pitcher Kyle Hart (Burbank, CA) took over in the
fourth and threw 1 2/3, yielding three runs on six hits. Senior
pitcher Jack Winters (Oradell, NJ) then pitched for 1 1/3,
scattering six hits and allowing four runs. In two innings of work
in the eighth and ninth, sophomore pitcher Adam Byrd (Bullhead
City, AZ) held Claremont-Mudd-Scripps hitless and scoreless.
Alex Sunderland went the distance on the hill for the Stags,
earning the victory. He allowed four runs on six hits and four
walks while striking out five.
Junior rightfielder Nate Carlson (Portland, OR) and sophomore
first baseman Jon Cavender (Rancho Cucamonga, CA) each paced the
Bulldog attack with two hits each.
Max Rose helped fuel the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps offense with a
4-for-4 outing, hitting for the cycle. Rose also scored three runs
and drove in two.
Redlands (27-8, 19-7 SCIAC) hopes to return to its winning ways
on Friday (April 30) when it travels to Whittier to face Whittier
College in a SCIAC game. The first pitch is set for 3 p.m.
