The University of Redlands women's lacrosse team took to the
road on Saturday for its first contest away from Farquhar Field
since February 28. Facing off against Occidental College in a
Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC)
match-up, the Bulldogs jumped out to an early 4-0 lead and later
held off a late push by the Tigers to secure a 21-15 victory in the
teams' second meeting of the season.
Within the first seven minutes of the game, the Bulldogs jumped
out to a 7-1 advantage and appeared to be on cruise control for an
easy win over the Tigers. Junior midfielder Christy Smith (St.
Louis Park, MN) notched two of her three goals and one of her three
assists during this offensive explosion.
However, Occidental answered by outscoring the Bulldogs through
the first three minutes of the second period to cut the lead to one
at 11-10.
Not to be outdone, Redlands erupted with a 7-0 run that included
a hat trick from senior midfielder Haley Kern (Portland, OR), which
put the Bulldogs up by a score of 18-10. During this span,
sophomore attack player Ashley Finke (Austin, TX) provided two of
her four goals for the game.
After the teams twice traded goals, Redlands sophomore
midfielder Megan Prickett (Poway, CA) converted a free-position
shot to give her team a 21-13 lead.
Although the Tigers made a final push with three unanswered
goals in the remaining five minutes, the Bulldogs' victory was
never in question.
Finke and Kern each finished with four goals, while Smith
tallied three goals, three assists, and six draw controls.
Sophomore goalkeeper Ana Martinez (Pleasanton, CA) patrolled the
Redlands net by making eight saves in a complete game.
The Bulldogs (9-4, 4-1 SCIAC) face off against conference foe
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on Wed., April 14, at 7:30 p.m. in
Claremont. They strive to avenge their only SCIAC loss of the
season during this important showdown.
