The University of Redlands women's water polo team took fifth at
the 2010 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
(SCIAC) Championship Tournament, which occurred from Friday through
Sunday at the Haldeman Pool in Claremont.
Redlands ended up in a tie for fourth in the final conference
standings with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges. Due to
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps' better finish at the SCIAC Championship
Tournament, the Athenas will likely gain selection into the
Collegiate III Championships over Redlands.
Redlands, which held the No. 4 seed, squared off with
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday. The Athenas held the Bulldogs
scoreless through the first half, but the Maroon and Gray battled
back. Despite a valiant late push, Redlands wound up losing, 2-3.
Freshman drivers Moana Tuipulotu (Lahaina, HI) and Jill Stein (Palm
Desert, CA) each scored, while senior goalkeeper Whitney Schieler
(Porterville, CA) made three saves.
The Bulldogs regrouped and blasted Caltech by a count of 18-3 on
Saturday. Freshman driver Kara Parker (Houston, TX) netted a troika
of goals, while junior driver Tory Haynes (Valley Center, CA),
sophomore driver Casey Sripramong (Glendale, CA) and Stein chipped
in with two apiece. Sophomore center Jaime Nippert (Gresham, OR),
Tuipulotu, sophomore center Jamie Paul (Boring, OR), freshman
driver Georgia Tunioli (Riverside, CT), sophomore driver Joy Corona
(Lake Bluff, IL), junior driver Chandler Weeks (Palm Desert, CA),
freshman driver Lindsey Zehner (Portland, OR) and Schieler each
scored once to round out Redlands' tally. Freshman goalkeeper
Cecile Gernez (Mountain View, CA) and junior goalkeeper Tiana
Singley (Benicia, CA) shared time in net, making three and two
saves, respectively.
Finally, Redlands closed out its weekend on Sunday with a 12-7
victory over Whittier College in the fifth-place game. Tuipulotu
keyed the Bulldog attack with four goals, while Nippert and Corona
each rattled the back of the cage twice. Weeks, Stein, freshman
center Rebecca Moore (San Diego, CA) and Valenzuela spelled out
Redlands' scoring. Schieler turned away 10 shots guarding the
Bulldog cage.
Redlands (15-14, 6-4 SCIAC) finishes out the regular season tied
for fourth in the conference standings and will now await the
announcement of a possible selection into the Collegiate III
Championships.
