Box Score The University of Redlands baseball team opened up Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) competition earlier today by silencing the Stags of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges by a score of 4-0. With a one-run lead in the bottom of the fourth, senior outfielder Nate Carlson (Portland, OR) uncorked his first home run of the season to lead the Bulldogs to victory.
In addition, senior pitcher Derek Johnson (Canby, OR) stepped up with a complete game in only his second appearance of the season. He allowed only four hits while ringing up eleven batters in the process, earning his second victory in two outings.
Redlands initiated the scoring in the bottom half of the third inning as junior transfer third baseman Jason Henning (Redlands, CA) crossed the plate on a Stag throwing error. Henning went on to collect two hits in the ball game, going 2-for-3 for his first multi-hit showing as a Bulldog.
Carlson's two-run dinger off of a 2-0 fastball came in the fourth to put the Bulldogs up, 3-0. Overall, he recorded a 2-for-3 showing at the plate for his third consecutive multi-hit performance of the season.
After being walked, senior outfielder Brandon Owashi (San Diego, CA) provided stellar base running to garner one final run in the bottom of the eighth. He benefited from the CMS pitcher's wild throw on a pick-off attempt, which moved him to third base. Senior shortstop Chase Tucker (Poway, CA) then brought in Owashi with a grounder to the shortstop.
Eight of the nine starting Bulldogs reached base safely in today's contest.
As part of a conference three-game series, Redlands (2-1, 1-0 SCIAC) faces CMS in tomorrow's doubleheader, which begins at 11 a.m. in Claremont.
