The University of Redlands women's tennis traveled to Santa Cruz for a Saturday showdown against regional rival No. 26 UC Santa Cruz. After facing an early deficit in doubles, the Bulldogs never recovered and settled for a 2-7 defeat to the Banana Slugs.
Redlands captured just one of the doubles points when the No. 3 tandem of sophomore Amanda Alvarez (Pomona, CA) and freshman Paige Press (La Jolla, CA) put together an 8-5 victory.
The loss was quickly eminent for the Bulldogs as the first four singles matches went in favor of UC Santa Cruz. However, Alvarez remained perfect on the day by recording a solid 6-1, 6-4 victory at the No. 5 slot for the Maroon and Gray's second point of the day.
Senior Sara Yoshinaga (Honolulu, HI) pushed her opponent to three sets but came up short in the super-breaker, 7-5, 4-6, 13-11.
Redlands (1-1) returns home to the friendly surroundings of Verdieck Courts on Saturday for a 10 a.m. Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) match against the Tigers of Occidental College.
