The University of Redlands baseball team completed a three-game sweep of the Caltech Beavers by rolling to a 22-0 victory on Sunday. With the win, the Bulldogs now sit atop the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) standings with a 12-3 record.
Against the Beavers, the Maroon and Gray scored two or more runs in all but one frame en route to a season-high scoring total of 22. Due to the conference's 10-run rule, the game was completed after seven innings.
Redlands jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and never glanced back.
Six different starting players collected a multi-hit game, including three individuals with a three-knock day.
Headlining the Bulldogs' showings at the plate, sophomore third baseman Jason Henning (Redlands, CA) registered a game-high and season-best five RBI in the game. The three-bagger also went 3-for-5 at the dish, including the game's only triple, while also scoring two runs.
Junior designated hitter Ben Saunders (New River, AZ) drove home three RBI to match his career-best performance.
Sophomore center fielder Ryan Buscemi (Tiburon, CA) led the Bulldogs on the base paths by crossing the diamond on four occasions.
Redlands' pitching staff finished out the weekend series without allowing a single Beaver run over a 21-inning span. Picking up Sunday's victory, junior lefty Adam Byrd (Bullhead City, AZ) notched his second win in as many starts.
Out of the pen, sophomore Paul Dippel (East Granby, CT), junior Trenton Lively (La Verne, CA) and rookie Ross Orman (Corvallis, OR) combined to close out the final four innings while allowing a mere two hits.
Redlands (18-6, 12-3 SCIAC) travels to Whittier College for an important SCIAC doubleheader against the Poets on Saturday at 11 a.m.
