The 28th-ranked University of Redlands women's tennis team halted its recent skid with a solid 8-1 victory over Cal Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks on Friday. The Bulldogs built upon a 2-1 lead after doubles with a sweeping performance in the singles matches for their fourth Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) victory of the season.
While playing without senior Sara Yoshinaga (Honolulu, HI), Redlands rallied with a revised doubles lineup and recorded two points for the early lead. The No. 3 duo of freshman Paige Press (La Jolla, CA) and sophomore Amanda Alvarez (Pomona, CA) made quick work of their counterparts, rolling to an 8-1 victory for the team's first point.
After a hiccup at the No. 2 slot, the Bulldogs surged ahead with an impressive comeback rally at the top spot. As a result of the adjusted lineup, the tandem of freshman Jessica Ly (Torrance, CA) and sophomore Julia Galbraith (Tacoma, WA) took over the No. 1 position. After an uncharacteristically rough start, the duo faced a 0-7 deficit and multiple match points. However, these Bulldogs clawed their way back to win nine straight games for the match victory.
In singles, Redlands maintained control by taking every match in straight sets. Senior Rachael Miller (Newport Beach, CA) and Press both cruised to 6-1, 6-1 victories at their respective positions of No. 1 and No. 4, before Ly clinched the fifth point with her 6-4, 6-0 performance at No. 2.
The Bulldogs also gained wins from Galbraith, junior Katherine Guimapang (Norwalk, CA) and Alvarez.
Redlands (9-6, 4-1 SCIAC) welcomes the 16th-ranked Athenas of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges to Verdieck Courts for Saturday's 10 a.m. SCIAC match.
