The University of Redlands women's water polo team continued its flare for the dramatic with an exciting 9-8 victory over rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on Wednesday night. Following Saturday's overtime thriller against Occidental College, the Bulldogs scored seven straight goals to prevail in the one-goal triumph against the Athenas.
The teams opened the contest by trading goals through the 5:04-mark of the second period.
With the score tied at two all, CMS gained a little momentum with a two-goal spurt to finish out the half.
However, the Bulldogs quickly regrouped to rattle off six unanswered netters in the game-changing third stanza. Redlands gained goals from five different players as senior center Jaime Nippert (Gresham, OR) notched the only multi-score effort of the period.
The momentum stayed with the Maroon and Gray at the start of the final frame when junior center-defender Jill Stein (Palm Desert, CA) found the back of the net for her second score of the game.
But the Athenas refused to go away quietly, mounting a four-goal effort in the final 3:26 of the contest.
Nonetheless, Redlands held off the late comeback to prevail in a 9-8 decision.
Sophomore goalkeeper Julie Lupfer (San Diego, CA) provided 10 stops while protecting the Bulldogs' net.
In addition to Nippert and Stein, junior driver Moana Tuipulotu (Lahaina, HI) scored twice, while freshman center-defender Deandra Van Houten (Huntington Beach, CA), freshman center-defender Haley Hollinrake (Redlands, CA), and senior driver Casey Sripramong (Glendale, CA) chipped in one apiece.
Redlands (14-13, 3-1 SCIAC) travels to Caltech on Saturday for an 11 a.m. SCIAC contest against the Beavers. The Bulldogs also head to Chapman later that day for a pair of non-conference bouts as they face San Diego State at 3 p.m. and then the Panthers at 6 p.m.
