Despite tying the contest early in the fourth period, the University of Redlands women's water polo team stumbled against Cal Lutheran University on Saturday, losing by a final score of 8-10.
Bulldog senior driver Moana Tuipulotu (Lahaina, HI) initiated the scoring on the day, finding the back of the net with 6:11 remaining in the opening frame to give Redlands the early lead. Following two goals from the Regals, Tuipulotu scored again for Redlands, evening the score at 2-2.
Redlands sophomore center-defender Deandra Van Houten (Huntington Beach, CA), freshman center Meg Claypool (Portland, OR), junior center Jaci Cochrane (San Bernardino, CA) and senior driver Jill Stein (Palm Desert, CA) each registered scores in the second stanza for the Bulldogs to give the Maroon and Gray a one-goal advantage at the break.
Cal Lutheran tallied two scores to open the third frame, but the U of R responded when Cochrane notched her second goal of the day with 1:51 left in the period, tying the score at 7-7.
The Regals regained the lead, however, with less than one minute remaining in the third and took that one-goal advantage into the fourth and final stanza. Freshman utility player Annie Kinney (Balboa, CA) came out firing for Redlands to start the fourth period, finding the back of the net with 7:11 remaining on the clock to tie the game at 8-8.
That goal though, would be the last the Bulldogs would score for the game, while surrendering two late goals to Cal Lutheran, resulting in the tough two-goal defeat.
Once again for the U of R, junior goalkeeper Julie Lupfer (San Diego, CA) played stellar in the cage, racking up 11 total saves.
Redlands (11-17, 4-3) has one conference game left against Caltech on Wednesday, April 17, before the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championship Tournament. Wednesday evening's contest in Pasadena is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
